What do you do on a normal Friday lunch hour? I’m going to guess you probably aren’t rounding up co-workers for a nice, healthy game of… space tag. Well, lucky us, we had the privilege to do just that a few weeks back. As “research/ development” for our new job, we decided to take our Friday lunch hour and travel to the nearest and coolest Space Tag facility, in Ellisville, MS. We needed action photos and a few other photos in general (this is me being serious), but we also took the opportunity for a fun time, of course. After all, who can pass up a game of space tag? Lasers, lights, Star Wars music, good food, and the complete satisfaction of a girls vs. guys competition (which the girls dominated, by the way). The owners are the sweetest people you’ll ever meet and the atmosphere was extremely clean and professional. We were all extremely impressed and so excited to hear that within the next year they are adding an indoor go cart track! Absolutely cannot wait to go back for more <del>fun</del>, I mean, research. I would recommend this place to anyone, of any age.

Basically, what I’m saying is, you need to find a day and take your lunch break at Space Tag, it could possibly change your life. Well, at least put a little pep in your step for the rest of the day.

Mr. Andrew Crane introduced this video to us this morning. Not only do we like the video for obvious reasons, but we also think it does make a very valid point. Not that we think that what we do can be done by children but an abundance of potential lies, where you put in the right amount of creativity and thought . Hope you enjoy! A good job & kudos to the guys who created this whomever you are (we looked and tried to find you sorry…)

Roberts Creative Adds Two New Employees

LAUREL, Miss. — Roberts Creative, a multi-media ad agency located in downtown Laurel,
Miss., has welcomed two new employees to its growing staff. Brooke Cole Davis and Matt
Flowers, both residents of Laurel, will be working to create campaigns to promote businesses
and individuals over print, radio, television and web media.

In addition to being the new copy writer/executive assistant for Roberts Creative Group, Davis is
also a student and wife, and she is ecstatic about her current residency in the Historic District of
Downtown Laurel. Davis is a 2007 graduate of Taylorsville High School and currently an
English licensure major at The University of Southern Mississippi. She hopes to bring her love
of people and skill of writing to the present and future clients of Roberts Creative.

Local businessman Flowers has joined Roberts Creative Group as the new account executive.
Flowers has known Eric Roberts, owner of Roberts Creative Group, and been involved in the
behind the scenes work of this business for many years. Flowers has his own experience with
marketing, as he has owned and managed two successful local restaurants for the past 14 years.
He says that his experience in the restaurant business has taught him many aspects of what works
and doesn’t work in marketing. He, along with the other Roberts Creative Group staff, is looking
forward to partnering with other growing companies to help create great marketing campaigns.

“Honestly, this [Robert’s Creative Group] is just a good fit for any entrepreneur that wants to
connect himself with successful business relationships,” said Flowers. He is husband to Amy
Flowers and the father of two boys.

Roberts, a Laurel native, opened Roberts Creative in fall 2007. After working in the film
industry, for five years, Roberts returned to his hometown to start his business, renovating an old
warehouse next to the Eastman-Gardiner Building into a modern studio office. For more
information about Roberts Creative’s branding and marketing services, contact Roberts at 601-

We aren’t just computer savy, lean mean design/brand creating machines here at RCG. We are also, quite stylish. This morning as we showed up at work and realized that most of the crew was sporting the black and white stripes, a photoshoot was quickly in session. It was definitely my idea, and the guys weren’t extremely excited about it but as you can tell it didn’t take much for them to “get into character”. Nothing like a little cool breeze and photoshoot first thing in the morning to get those creative juices flowing.

Last Sunday 25th, 2010 I competed in the toughest race I have ever competed in. Ironman 70.3 Augusta. This experience has left an indelible impression on me. The Ironman race is meant to take your body to the limits of its physical & mental condition and for me it was that and so much more. In my previous blog tri-design-succeed I talked a little about some of the comparisons between a triathletes training and then performance day with the comparison to the ad world. I usually would not take time to use the company blog for personal thoughts, but this experience will for sure transcend my personal thoughts into professional and beyond. I have been training for this event since February of this year. It has taken that long for me to get my body to the physical condition and get my mind to the mental capacity to be able to endure the stress that an Ironman event brings to the table.

In this year’s Ironman 70.3 Augusta there were over 3,000 competitors in the event. It is truly a site to behold with that many people pushing and grinding through one of the toughest events on the planet. I was telling my wife that at some point in the race your body starts to shut down and it is only your mind that wills the body to keep going. I feel very fortunate to be at a point in my life that my family decided to make the sacrifice for the type of training this event requires. I look forward to more Ironman events, although i need to put some time between me and this one.

For those of you thinking there is no way I could do this, well just know that I could barely run a 5k two years ago.

I did see one sign while I was on the run course that I thought was pretty funny it said, “if this were easy they would call it football.” I’m sure that will get me some calls…

8 months! 8 whole months I have officially been employed at Roberts Creative. Yet, every single day I still tend to learn something new. That’s if, I’ll just keep my ears and mind open to learning. Sometimes that is a lot harder than we think. Well, at least it is to me.

Something that people never fail to ask me these days about work is always summed up in that ONE question. The “Oh really, what do you guys do over there?” question. It’s the first thing out of their mouth. Every single time. At first, I used to mix up words and figure out something cute, funny, or creative to fill in the answer slot. Whether, it really was related to what we do here or not. (Don’t tell Eric that though!). Over the past few months I have read countless blogs, emails, articles, and more to get to know this business. I want to know this creative world the best way possible (I want to speak the language). Unfortunately, that doesn’t come quickly or extremely easy.

We have web designers, brand strategist, photographers, motion graphic designers, and video producers. They are all striving to give your company, your business, the most effective brand awareness possible in whatever avenue that means. It all comes down to helping connect your company to your market. Lately, along with many other things I do here at RC, I have begun to stick my hand in photography a little more. I have always loved photos, cameras, and capturing moments, but recently I decided to further my knowledge about it all. I have countless amounts of favorite photography blogs and with each one I am more and more fascinated. The competition for photography is so fierce because we are living in an culture with endless innovation. We want to work hard and see results instantly. With photography, it’s the little details that amaze me. It’s the way they angle the camera, the perfect lighting, the softness of a picture. When I see a photo I want to feel like I am in that moment. Though, capturing a moment that is precious and making it real is a very difficult task.

I started thinking about all the ad agencies in Mississippi, then began to think of the ad agencies in our nation and so on and so on. What is their goal? What is our goal?

It all comes together and somehow it all intertwines. I love photography, and I love the satisfaction of someone being happy with a product that I produced. Isn’t that how we all feel? We want to feel a sense of accomplishment and appreciation. I know you all do, even those of you who are trying to be humble and deny that little factor of life. Maybe initially, the reason we start a business is because we want that personal feeling of independence and to have a goal set that we will always work toward. There will always be another task, there will always be another learning opportunity, and there will always be something you can look back on and be proud of.

In my head I thought, “This is exactly how we want our company to be portrayed”. I mean, to be very honest, this is how people who vision purpose for their life want to feel. We want our clients to come in, feel comfortable, be able to share with us their desire and vision, and then for us to communicate and make that vision a reality. In life, we desire to live by sharing our stories, our goals and be able to someday, somehow, live out those passions and dreams.

Whether it be having your own clothing website, living out your dream construction business, or starting a new church. Hopefully, we can help fill in a piece of that puzzle.

So go ahead, bring on the infamous question. I am focused and ready with an answer!

For some time I have been training for Ironman 70.3 in Augusta Georgia. While training I have been reading a book by Joel Friel & Gordon Byrn called Going Long. The book deals with the aspects of not only training your body but also your mind for these long distances.

What has been interesting to me is all the similarities between not only the struggles of running a business but also running an multimedia agency. So many times in the design process the process goes something like this: design fail, design fail, design succeed.

So many times we as business owners go through this same process. Through training for triathlons there is much preparation and anticipation for the day of the race. Typically, there have been months and months of training for one specific day for one to test their mettle with natures elements. In business and particularly an agency, the process is very much the same. We research, develop and nurture relationships sometimes for years in order for that one opportunity. Waiting for a chance to test our mettle or in our case our creative potency. In both triathlons and agency growth it seems nine times out of ten the win usually goes to the one that is the most prepared to push on through the race with perseverance, patience, and focus.

I want to share this quote from Going Long (you can basically replace training or race with design):

“The art of training is to lean against our own breaking points from time to time, thereby pushing our own boundaries further out. When we push too hard, we get injured, become depressed, and or break down in some other way. All are sign that we have gone too far. Elites (in life and sport) have the ability to push themselves but, more importantly, they know when to back off. Racing well is demanding. If you want to race well, then you must practice the ability to maintain mental strength when your body and mind start to doubt.
Train your mind slowly over time. Many people get down on themselves for not being able to maintain a fighting spirit for a whole race. That is why many “slow” athletes can be relatively competitive at the Ironman distance: They have trained their minds never to quit. All it takes is practice. Rest assured that when you are hurting, everyone else is feeling the same.“
